Patient Centred Care: Merging of Western and Eastern Medicine

NOW is the time to take responsibility for your personal wellness!

Naturopathic doctors are results-focused primary health care providers that combine modern scientific knowledge with traditional, natural forms of medicine. Naturopathic Doctors view symptoms as warning lights pointing to a deeper issue. I do not believe in “Band-Aid” therapies to remove symptoms. Instead, I work to treat the underlying cause of disease. No two people are the same, so neither should be two therapies.

Naturopathic treatment options are guided by six fundamental principles:

  1. To do no harm by using safe and effective treatments that minimize the risk of harmful side effects.
  2. To treat the cause of disease by identifying and removing the root cause instead of masking or suppressing symptoms.
  3. To teach and encourage personal health management by sharing knowledge and empowering patients to take responsibility for their own health.
  4. To heal the whole person through customized care by understanding the unique mental, emotional, physical, genetic, environmental and social factors in a person’s life that contribute to illness.
  5. To emphasize prevention through collaborative care, identification of risk factors and preventative action to ensure lifelong wellness.
  6. To support the healing power of the body by removing obstacles to cure and stimulate the body’s innate healing ability.

People… not symptoms. Your health concerns may have developed from deficiencies, toxicity, inflammation and chronic stress.  I work to identify these areas, support the body and develop sustainable health practices. I have a passion for detoxification and digestive health with a special focus in hormone management and women’s health.  I treat health concerns such as hypothyroidism, pain, low energy/chronic fatigue, menopause/andropause, fertility/reproductive health, mood/anxiety, weight management and child wellness.

My mission is to listen to your story, to respect your healthcare choices and support you through your health journey. My goal is to provide you with the best care I can and develop strong care-provider -patient relationships because you deserve health AND care. I give guidance and explanation for conventional and naturopathic treatment options. I offer education to help you decide which medications, supplements, therapies, etc. are best for YOU. I provide realistic, reliable, evidence-based solutions so you can accomplish your health goals and strive to help you achieve radiant health. I aim to get to the root cause of your health challenges and answer the tough questions of “why” you are experiencing your symptoms. I offer peace of mind and information that you can rely on and trust.

What Education do N.D’s Receive?

Like Medical Doctors, Naturopathic Doctors must first obtain a Bachelor’s Degree with medical prerequisite courses. N.D.s must then take a four year medical school program from an accredited School of Naturopathy. Some areas of study include anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, pediatrics, oncology, traditional Chinese medicine, nutrition, botanical medicine and psychology. Naturopaths must also partake in continuing education and pass two professional licensing exams and a prescription licensing exam. In Ontario, Naturopathic Doctors are regulated healthcare practitioners and are governed under the Ontario Regulated Health Professions Act.

Conventional Medicine Vs. Naturopathic Medicine

Both naturopathic and conventional medicine are both valuable systems that excel at different aspects of patient care. Conventional medicine is critical in an emergency situation, whereas naturopathic medicine focuses preventative medicine. Your medical doctor is trained to treat symptoms with drugs or surgery. Naturopathic doctors attempt to treat the root cause of your unique health issue. Naturopathic medicine is a step to addressing chronic diseases like eczema, heart disease, arthritis and cancer because these conditions improve when diet, lifestyle and nutrient deficiencies are addressed and corrected. Naturopathic medicine can also safely treat acute non-emergent illnesses such as colds, flus, headaches and muscle pain.

Naturopathic modalities are evidence-based. They support the body’s immune system and strengthen vitality. Naturopathic medicine does share similarities with the conventional model. Naturopathic Doctors routinely order conventional labs and scans along with functional medicine testing. N.D.s establish accurate diagnoses, develop individualized treatment plans and monitor treatment success. Where necessary, Naturopathic Doctors with prescription rights are able to write prescriptions for some pharmaceutical medications. N.D.s are trained to know when to refer and work in conjunction with your medical doctor, oncologist, osteopath, chiropractor, midwife or acupuncturist.
