We live in a youth-obsessed society that panics at the first sight of a wrinkle. Shamefully, I’ll admit, I am one of these people!  With a history of way too many hours basking in the sun I am doing everything possible to keep my skin healthy and glowing. One of the ways I nourish my skin is through exfoliating with sugar scrub.

Homemade DIY scrubs are incredibly easy to make and truly deliver. Whether or not you use salt or sugar your skin will feel wickedly soft and refreshed. Exfoliating detoxifies the skin and brightens your complexion by removing dull, dead skin cells.  The process also kills bacteria, preventing breakouts. To achieve a gorgeous glow and reveal healthy, younger skin, I exfoliate 1-2x weekly.

It’s actually mind-blowing the amount of $$$$ companies are charging for salt/sugar scrubs!  If you are purchasing these products I am sorry to say, you are being fooled into purchasing sugar and oil plus some fragrance, and worst of all weird chemicals for at least 10x the price. No Joke!

Here’s my simple solution…

  1. Buy a bag of sea salt/epson salt or organic sugar
  2. Grab the oil of your choice (olive oil, almond oil, jojoba oil, almond oil, coconut oil)
  3. Invest in some quality essential oils (lavender, frankincense, peppermint, eucalyptus, tea tree, geranium)
  4. Ditch the funky chemicals that commercial products are laced with.

Bingo, You’re ready. All that is left to do is experiment and customize your ratios and ingredients. The result will be glowing skin to show for your not-so-much efforts. Here are some recipes to get the wheels turning. Personally, I combine all the dry ingredients then add the oils until a desired consistency is reached. I often find I am adding more oil then these recipes call for.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups sugar or salt
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup almond oil (or other)
  • 1-2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp orange zest (optional)

Directions:

  1. Mix together the sugars/dry ingredients first
  2. Slowly add the coconut or almond oil while stirring. You may need to slightly warm the coconut oil.
  3. Pour in as much oil as you need to get your desired consistency.  I like my sugar scrubs more oily so I always end up adding extra.
  4. Stir and mix thoroughly.
  5. Stir in any essential oils last
  6. Store in an airtight container.
  7. Use within a month

Your How to Guide:

  1. In the shower after you have applied and rinsed with soap rub the exfoliating scrub all over in a small circular motion.
  2. Continue to rub all over until your skin is light pink but not to the point of creating pain.
  3. Rinse with warm water and towel dry.
  4. Follow this up with your favourite homemade body lotion.
  5. LOVE THE SKIN YOU’RE IN!
